Artificial intelligence is evolving astonishingly, and numerous companies are investing heavily in its development.
MidJourney is another AI model that generates images based on user prompts.
MidJourney and Stable Diffusion are image-generative AIs that create images using human prompts or input.
This article will discuss the relationship between MidJourney and Stable Diffusion AI.

Understanding MidJourney AI
The AI is developed by MidJourney.inc, a San Francisco-based independent research lab.
MidJourney is an image-generative AI that uses text prompts to create an image suited to the user’s needs.
It is a closed-source AI; the Company claims that they develop and train its model in-house with its own AI Supercluster.
However, the Company does not offer detailed information about the technology used to generate its images.
The models are simply referred to as V1, V2, V3, V4, V5 and the latest Version 5.1, which was launched on May 3, 2023.
V5.1 includes adding more specifics about objects, places, and creatures using multiple prompts and image prompting.
MidJourney generates images through its Discord server and creates detailed images upon user prompts.
The model will basically use your concept and add elements to the photos themselves.
Sometimes your input may get ignored as the tool will create its own version of the image, adjusting its color, light, and other elements.
It’s very plain and simple; you just type the image command at your prompt, and then the bot generates a 4-piece set of images.
Furthermore, you can choose any generated images to be further upscale.
What Is Stable Diffusion AI?
Developed by Stability AI, Stable Diffusion is another text-to-image generative AI that creates hyper-realistic pictures per the user’s preference.
Stable Diffusion strongly promotes open-source culture.
Anyone can use its code and develop their own model by fine-tuning the settings the way they want.
That is why the image created on Stable Diffusion seems similar to the images generated by DALL-E.
Furthermore, Stable Diffusion requires a computer with at least 8GB of RAM.
Some examples where Stable Diffusion works are Lexica, Nightcafe, DreamStudio, HuggingFace, and so on.
Does MidJourney Use Stable Diffusion?
Although there is some similarity between these AI models, both follow the same principle of image generation through text prompts.
It is very difficult to say that Mid Journey uses the elements of Stable Diffusion AI in its development.
The Company has stated that they don’t use Stable Diffusion.
However, it is speculated that the similarity between the images created by Version 5 of MidJourney and Stable Diffusion V2 suggests otherwise.
Another theory connects both companies through an open-source model called Open Journey, a Stable Diffusion model on MidJourney images.
Here, it is suggested that there are some combined elements from both tools in the Open Journey AI.
Furthermore, refer to the table below to learn the differences between Stable Diffusion and MidJourney;
MidJourney | Stable Diffusion |
---|---|
MidJourney is a proprietary technology, and users have little control over its development and design. | Stable Diffusion releases its source code for the public to use, giving users more control over their creations. |
MidJourney requires very little text prompt for creating highly detailed images. | Stable Diffusion gives users more control over the image creation process. |
It creates more realistic and higher quality images. | It produces more natural looking photographs. |
MidJourney offers a better user interface. | The user interface of Stable Diffusion is more cluttered but is fairly easy to use. |
The Bottom Line
Both tools are distinct; Stable Diffusion is open-sourced, while the other is proprietary.
Mid Journey is more user-friendly, requiring very few text prompts for creations.
Stable Diffusion provides more control to the users, allowing them to add more detailed elements with more detailed text prompts.
However, MidJourney doesn’t claim to use Stable Diffusion.
