Meta, the parent Company of Facebook, was sued in a class-action lawsuit for allegedly sharing their user data with third-party firms without user consent. 

One of the third-party firms was Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm responsible for Donald Trump’s digital campaigning in the U.S. 2016 presidential elections. 

Moreover, all Facebook users in the United States are eligible for the share between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022.

You can also apply for someone deceased. However, Meta directors and legal representatives are not eligible to apply.

How Much Will I Get From Facebook Settlement?

The final amount Facebook users will receive from the Settlement will be revealed after a conformational hearing on 7th September 2023.

Afterward, if the final hearing approves the Settlement, the administrator will divide the money according to a point system after the legal fees.

In this case, the lawyers can claim up to 25% of the legal fees, around $180 million.

The administrator will divide the remaining money between Facebook users, around 545 million dollars. This fund is known as the “Net Settlement Fund.”

You will receive a point for every month you have activated a Facebook account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022

Furthermore, after the deadline, the administrator will add the total points and divide the previously mentioned “Net Settlement Amount” by that number.

Follow the steps below to file a claim for the Facebook User Privacy Settlement for a deceased person;

  1. Fill out the Facebook User Privacy Settlement claim form with their information and name.

  1. Then, you must request a name change to the beneficiary or estate of the claimant, providing a copy of the death certificate.
  2. Afterward, email the administrator through its secure portal, including documentation, such as death certificate and beneficiary information. 
  3. You can log on to the Settlement administrator’s secure portal with the claim ID.
  4. Then, use the deceased person’s full name and register with your email and password.
Note: The deadline for the Claim form online is 11:59 pm PDT on August 25, 2023. For the people using the mailing system, make sure you postmark the Claim Form by August 25, 2023.
