Meta offers free base VR games to Quest 2, 3, and Pro users. But players cannot say the same for the recent Gorilla Tag Online release.
The confusion comes from the fact that Gorilla Tag costs 20$ on Steam but is free for Quest users.
This has caused a huge stir in online gaming threads where people are slamming the creators for this discrimination.

Introduction To Gorilla Tag
Gorilla Tag is a virtual reality game where players are immersed in a world of gorillas.
Literally, every player inside the game appears as a gorilla and rejoices in the same environment.
It provides an exhilarating experience for newcomers as it capitalizes on the full potential of VR technology.
This is a fast-paced adrenaline-filled game where players can swing, sprint or jump all around the map as a gorilla.
Game Modes In Gorilla Tag
There is always so much to do when you are a Gorilla yourself in the game.
Thankfully, the devs have realized that too and blessed their players with lots of game modes.
Currently, the game features 3 different game modes: Simple Tag, Infection mode, Hunt Game, and Paintbrawl.
And each of these game modes is equally fun and immersive with distinct objectives.
Now, let us dive into these topics to learn about their aims and objectives below:
1. Simple Tag
Simple Tag is a game mode in which one player becomes the “It” or “Gorilla” at first.
Then, their objective is to chase and tag the other players who are trying to avoid being tagged.
The player that gets tagged by “it” becomes the new “it” and the game continues.
To win the game, other players must avoid “it” for the set time duration.
2. Infection Mode
This is a high-paced survival game where players are divided into 2 teams: Human and Gorilla.
The roles are randomly assigned, and one player starts off as the Alpha Gorilla.
The game aims for humans to avoid the Alpha Gorilla until the timer runs out.
In the case when the Alpha Gorilla tags the Human, that human also becomes a gorilla.
The game ends when all humans become infected or if humans survive till the end.
3. Hunt Game
Hunt Game mode is another interesting mode in Gorilla Tag where teams are divided into Gorillas and Hunters.
It is similar to Infection Mode, but this time it is Gorillas who have to run from the Hunters.
As soon as the game begins, the objective for Gorillas is to evade the Hunter’s pursuit.
On the other hand, Hunters aims to tag as many gorillas as possible for points.
The team with the most points at the game’s end wins.
4. Paint Brawl Mode
This is an action-packed mode where player are given paintings as their primary weapon.
In this game mode, players have to paint the opposing team’s gorilla into their team colors.
The game starts with teams Red and Blue starting at the opposing sides with balanced team members.
During the game, players have to shoot the opposing team’s gorillas by hitting the trigger button.
On top of that, they have to avoid being hit by constantly running and jumping around.
There are three ways the end of the game is determined:
- When all of the opposition team members get painted.
- When the timer runs out, the team with the most members wins the game.
- If the host sets the point system ON, the team with the most points wins the game.
The Bottom Line
Gorilla Tag is only free on Quest because Meta itself is the parent company of Quests.
The Quest devices already cost quite a lot ranging from 299.99$-999.99$ on their official website.
Hence, Gorilla Tag being free to them is probably a bonus reward for those who bought the Quest devices.
