Can Sitting in an Office Chair for Too Long Cause Feet Swelling?
One of the common causes of foot edema among office workers and students is chair-induced swollen feet caused by sitting for prolonged hours.

How to Treat Chair-Induced Swollen Feet?
If your feet are due to continuous time spent sitting, here are some ways you can reduce the swelling.
1. Exercises for Swelling Reduction
The foot movement is limited while we remain seated in our chairs.
Simple exercises can help move the muscles and lower the swelling by moving the build-up fluids back to the body’s center.
Here are some recommended exercises by a board-certified podiatric surgeon, Dr. Joel S. Segalman.
Leg Extensions: First, rest your feets flat on the ground. Stretch your right or left foot and raise it slightly, hold the posture for a while and repeat on each leg. Repeat the steps 20 to 30 times.
- Knee Lifts: Lift one of your legs and bend it towards the chest. Repeat with another leg. Repeat the steps 20-30 times.
Ankle Circles: Lift one of your feet and roll the ankle clockwise. Complete ten circles in one order and repeat with another foot. Repeat the steps five to ten times.
- Foot Pumps: Lift your toes and heels of the legs turn by turn, and return to a balanced state. Repeat the steps.
Using the disrupted sitting method also helps to reduce the swelling in the legs.
Research carried out to measure the effectiveness of disrupted sitting showed that exercising for three minutes at the interval of every house significantly subsided the leg swelling.

You can use a pillow or a cushion to keep your legs elevated as you lay down.

3. Adjust your Diet
Diet plays a vital role in your overall health. It can also affect the swelling of your feet.
If your feet are swollen from sitting long hours, you can follow a low salt and magnesium-rich diet.
The Standard recommended salt intake is 10 grams for men and eight for women.
According to the research, too much salt intake can increase fluid retention and cause swelling.

- Make a fist or extend your palm and gently massage your legs.
- Work your way up to the thighs.

5. Sleep on your Left
The side you sleep on determines the pressure on your veins while you sleep.
So, it would be best if you slept on your left side to help reduce the swelling. This position reduces the pressure on your veins and pumps blood back to your heart.
6. Soak your Foot in Warm Water
You can soothe your swollen feet by soaking them in warm water for 15-20 minutes.
The warm water will loosen up your lymph nodes allowing the build-up fluid to circulate. You can also add Epsom salt to the footbath.

You must sit in a correct posture to prevent your legs from swelling.
Make sure your seat height is adjusted according to your size, so your feet lay flat on the ground.

You need to change your position every hour. Stand up and move around before you start working again.

Some postures like crossing your legs might feel comfortable for a while. However, it can lead to pain and swelling.

Crossing your Legs: While crossing your feet, the feet that are under the other is under tremendous pressure.
Dangling Feet: Leaving your feet dangling in the air is bad for circulation and causes more swelling.
